Bokor, Cambodia, October 2015: Exploring the ruin of the French colonial era Bokor Casino Hotel in Cambodia. The Casino was fought over by the invading/liberating Vietnamese forces and the murderous Khmer Rouge from 1979 onward. A short film exploring a strategic century old fort in Wellington. Hopefully in the future the fort can be restored, so it can be enjoyed by everyone, not just taggers, street artists and the occasional urban explorer.
Patea, Taranaki, NZ, early 2012. An early attempt at making a video- I think I’ve improved (ever so slightly) since. This was filmed at a favorite location in Taranaki, the Patea Coolstores. Just walking around the place gives me the creeps- hence the horror-esque soundtrack. Happy Halloween folks!
Hawera, South Taranaki, NZ, 2011: The final days of the old Hawera Hospital (1925-2012). Demolition was already well underway with at least half the complex already gone. I rigged a compact digital camera onto the hot-shoe of my DSLR to capture on video the state the place and what I was taking photos of- plenty of shaky camera footage ensued.
Abandoned in 2002, the hospital’s state of decline over the next decade was dramatic and completely unnecessary. This was a personal journey as it was my local hospital when I was a child- I was born in the nearby maternity ward demolished earlier. It wasn’t a pretty exploration, it was a bleak and hazardous environment, the complete opposite of what a hospital is supposed to be- inhospitable. Still images from the old Hawera Hospital can be found here and here
